The Funeral
of Judge John B. Estes, died Sept. 16, 1903
The Atlanta Constitution, Sept. 17, 1903
Gainesville, Ga. The
funeral of Judge John B. Estes occurred at 11 o'clock this morning from the
Presbyterian church, and was conducted by Dr. T. M. McConnell, assisted by
Dr. J. A. Wynne and Dr. W. F. Quillan.
A large concourse of people gathered at the church to pay
a last tribute to the distinguished citizen, and the comments of the clergy
made a profound impression upon their hearers.
Judge Estes was an elder in this church for thirty one years, and his
last official service was that of moderator of the Athens Presbytery. For nearly twenty years he was superintendent
of the Presbyterian Sunday School, and at the time of his death he was Vice
President of Brenau College, in which he always took great interest.
There were many beautiful and elegant floral offerings on
the casket, and as evidence of the esteem in which Judge Estes was held all
stores and business houses were closed during the funeral service.
The remains were interred in Alta Vista Cemetery.
On account of the funeral of Judge Estes, the opening exercises
of Brenau College, which were to have occurred this morning, were postponed
until tomorrow at 10:30 o'clock. The
college has received a greater number of girls at the beginning of this term
than it has ever had before. The dormitory
is full to overflowing, and some of its nearby cottages will have to be called
into requisition, where the girls will be under the watchful care of teachers.
